Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Mark Holliman, RHP Garrett Sherrill, OF Erik Komatsu
Reinstated from DL: RHP Omar Aguilar, RHP Ryan Houston, LHP Daniel Meadows, C Corey Kemp

The Brewers cut ties with Fermaint, their fourth-round pick in ’03 from Puerto Rico, because for all his athleticism, he batted just .212/.277/.305 in 452 at-bats last season with high Class A Brevard County. He contributed 22 doubles and 27 stolen bases (in 37 attempts), but struck out 99 times and walked just 36 times. And the lack of production wasn’t an aberration. In three attempts at the Florida State League, the 23-year-old Fermaint mustered a line of .238/.301/.336 in 279 games.

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP John Ennis, RHP Scott Nestor, LHP Ryan Ariail
Reinstated from DL: LHP Walter Tejeda, OF Jeremy Slayden

Ariail, 24, signed with the Phillies last September after a three-year run in the independent Frontier and Northern leagues. He went to spring training with the Orioles in ’07, but was cut at the end of camp.

Designated for assignment LHP Dave Davidson
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Jimmy Barthmaier, RHP Tom Boleska, RHP Derek Hankins, RHP Bryan Morris, RHP Brian Slocum, LHP Corey Hamman, OF Jason Delaney

The Pirates signed Vazquez, a native of Cuba, in July ’07, but he never did suit up for the organization after missing all of ’08 with an injury. A native of South Africa, Willemburg went 2-for-7 as his nation’s third baseman in the World Baseball Classic. The 24-year-old last played pro ball in the U.S. in ’02, when he played in 16 games for the Arizona League Royals. Since then, he has played in Germany, England and South Africa, while representing his country in two WBCs and various international tournaments. Willemburg joins the growing list of WBC participants to earn contracts this spring. He joins Bruce Chen and Sidney Ponson (Royals) and Leon Boyd (Blue Jays).

Davidson lost his place on the roster when the Pirates traded for Delwyn Young.

Optioned to Triple-A: 3B Matt Tuiasosopo
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Luis Pena, SS Carlos Triunfel, OF Danny Carroll, OF Mike Wilson
Reinstated from DL: 3B Ronnie Prettyman, OF Freddy Guzman

Yes, the Mariners signed that Jeff Zimmerman, the former Rangers closer who hasn’t pitched in a professional game since ’03 or in the big leagues since ’01. He’s 36 and has had three elbow operations, but the Mariners apparently were impressed with what they saw in a private workout.

Carroll has been out of the low Class A Clinton lineup with a strained groin he suffered on Opening Day. Wilson was out with an ankle sprain. Mariners correspondent John Hickey reports that Triunfel had surgery to repair ankle damage and a broken fibula in his left leg and probably will miss at least four months of the season.

Boston released Hansack … wasn’t he on the DL? A player on DL can be released?

cbssports.com says the Red Sox have re-signed Hansack to a minor league deal.

Hansack has re-signed with the Red Sox, yes. He was released on April 22, removing him from the 40-man, and subsequently brought back on a minor league deal.

Hansack had served his time on the DL at the time of his release. Players can be placed on the minor league DL retroactively, just as they can in the major leagues. That could account for timing, as could the fact that these transactions can be up to a week old when they appear on this blog.
