Davis Romero admits he was a little surprised to be called up when Scott Schoeneweis was traded to the Reds in mid-August. Surprised or not, he made a positive impression as a lefthanded reliever. And that bodes well for next year, when it appears that the Blue Jays will take a cheaper route in their bullpen, at least in the situational roles.

Second baseman Ryan Roberts got his first major league and home run out of the way with one swing of the bat on Aug. 3 at Yankee Stadium against Cory Lidle. The home run in his fourth major league at-bat made him the seventh player in franchise history whose first big league hit was a home run and the first position player since Junior Felix in 1989.
