Cardinals Deal 2010 First-Rounder For Mujica

The Deal
The Marlins were still buyers on July 5, when they traded minor league third baseman Matt Dominguez and lefthander Rob Rasmussen to the Astros for first baseman Carlos Lee. Now that they have traded Hanley Ramirez, Omar Infante and Anibal Sanchez, however, they are in rebuilding mode again. To that end, they moved one of their most effective relievers, Edward Mujica, to the Cardinals for third baseman Zack Cox, whose skills are nearly the inverse of Dominguez but who takes his place as the franchise's potential third baseman of the future.

Considered the best pure hitter in the 2010 draft, Cox batted .306/.363/.434 in his first full pro season and spent much of it in Double-A. But he has slumped this year in Triple-A, hitting just .254/.294/.421. After missing the first two weeks in June with a concussion, he began to heat up at the plate but hasn't played since July 21 after straining a hamstring. Cox has the short stroke, bat-on-ball skills and strength to hit for a solid average and at least average power, but he has yet to find a happy medium in pro ball. He has enough arm strength for third base, though he's a below-average runner and his range is adequate at best.
