Phillies Deal Another Outfielder, Send Pence To Giants

The Deal
Within hours of trading center fielder Shane Victorino to the Dodgers, the Phillies sent another member of their starting outfield to a National League West division contender. Philadelphia dealt 29-year-old right fielder Hunter Pence, whom they acquired a year ago at the trade deadline, to the Giants for prospects Tommy Joseph, a catcher, and Seth Rosin, a righthanded reliever, plus big league right fielder Nate Schierholtz.

The Giants can retain Pence's services through the rest of this season and for all of 2013, after which they could receive draft-pick compensation if they make him a qualifying contract offer. Philadelphia's motivation to deal Pence appears to be two-fold. For one thing, Joseph is a fine catching prospect, one of the best in the minors, but also the Phillies' 2013 payroll already is bloated to dangerous levels—and that's before adding on an arbitration raise for Pence. After handing Cole Hamels a six-year, $144 million contract last week, Philadelphia has four $20 million-plus players on the books for next season (Hamels, Cliff Lee, Ryan Howard, Roy Halladay) plus Chase Utley at $15 million and both Jonathan Papelbon and Jimmy Rollins at $11 million each.

Joseph has blossomed from one of the top power hitters available in the 2009 draft into one of the game's best catching prospects. Though he's batting just .260/.313/.391 in Double-A this year, he's young for the Eastern League—he turned 21 two weeks ago—and continues to show power potential to all fields. While he has done much more damage against lefthanders this year (.886 OPS vs. .640 against righties), he actually was more productive against righthanders in 2011. Joseph has worked hard to clean up his receiving and blocking, and scouts no longer wonder whether he can stay behind the plate. He also has plus arm strength and has erased 48 percent of basestealers this season.

Rosin worked as a starter at Minnesota, leading the Golden Gophers to a 2010 regional berth, and he has made 16 starts as a pro. The 2010 fourth-round pick has worked more as a reliever, though, and has a fine strikeout rate of 9.8 per nine innings in 156 career minor league frames. He's been a bit hittable as the closer with high Class A San Jose and profiles as a set-up man with a fastball that ranges from 88-94 mph. When Rosin's at his best, the pitch has some heaviness to it, and he gave up just three homers in 89 innings in the South Atlantic League in 2011. Rosin adds a slider and a changeup, with neither profiling as a premium pitch.
