New Acquisition Sizemore Fits At Second Or Third For A's

The Deal
For most of the season's first two months, the Athletics' bullpen featured four lefthanded relievers, including closer Brian Fuentes, and the club received little offensive production at either second or third base. Oakland sought to remedy both situations by trading lefty David Purcey to the Tigers for 26-year-old second baseman Scott Sizemore.

The A's nabbed Purcey, who is out of minor league options, in a mid-April trade with the Blue Jays that sent Danny Farquhar (back) to Toronto. Oakland also designated for assignment Jerry Blevins, leaving Fuentes, Craig Breslow and Bobby Cramer as the club's remaining lefty relievers. A Blue Jays first-round pick in 2004, Purcey relies on a fastball/changeup mix, so he's not the prototype matchup reliever. That hasn't stopped him from limiting big league lefties to a .234/.340/.326 batting line in 209 plate appearances.

Toledo (IL) AAA .416 23 77 17 32 7 1 2 15 12 19 3 .500 .610
Detroit (AL) MLB .222 17 63 8 14 1 0 0 4 10 19 1 .329 .238

Sizemore reached Triple-A in the second half of the 2009 season and in 170 games at the level has batted .315/.392/.487 with 19 home runs and 52 doubles for Toledo. That production hasn't made the jump from the International to the American League, however, and in two big league trials Sizemore has hit .223/.306/.306 in 237 plate appearances. At his best, Sizemore's line-drive stroke and discipline could translate to a .280 average with doubles power. He's not flashy around the second-base bag, but he has steady hands and a solid, accurate arm. Those same attributes, plus below-average running speed, could make Sizemore a fit at third base for the A's, and that's the position at which Oakland may try him with Triple-A Sacramento. Incumbents Mark Ellis (52 OPS+) and Kevin Kouzmanoff (62 OPS+), A's regulars at second and third base, won't hold him back for long.
