Crowded Infield Prompts Dodgers To Deal Theriot To Cardinals

The Deal
The Dodgers acquired second baseman Ryan Theriot at the 2010 trade deadline, but their offseason signing of free agent Juan Uribe forced him out of the picture for 2011. Theriot faced the strong possibility of being non-tendered, but that was before Los Angeles worked out a trade with the Cardinals. St. Louis swapped 27-year-old righthander Blake Hawksworth for Theriot, who runs well and can play either middle-infield position but has no power (career .356 slugging).

Healthy after a string of injuries cut into his early development time, Hawksworth has logged 130 innings with the Cardinals over the course of the past two seasons. He worked mostly as a reliever in that time, but he did make eight starts for St. Louis in 2010, going 3-4, 5.83 with 28 strikeouts, 21 walks and six homers allowed in 41 2/3 innings. Hawksworth profiles better in relief with an 90-93 mph fastball with late movement and a strong changeup with good separation. He threw his curveball and cutter more frequently as a starter, but they're both below-average pitches. Hawksworth has no options remaining, so he can't be sent to the minors without first clearing waivers.
