Where The Top 100 Prospects Open The Season

After Triple-A provided fans with a three-night warmup, Opening Day in the full-season  minor leagues is finally here. On Friday, all 120 clubs from Low-A to Triple-A will be in action—weather-permitting, of course—and a new slate of prospects will get their first chances to impress.

Rosters have been released across the minors in advance of Opening Night, and the chart below shows where each of Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects can be found.

First, some notes:

  • Eighteen Top 100 Prospects broke camp in the big leagues, including Top Five talents Bobby Witt Jr. (Royals), Julio Rodriguez (Mariners) and Spencer Torkelson (Tigers). It might have been a full 20% of the Top 100 were it not for injuries to Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman and Tigers outfielder Riley Greene.
  • Five teams in the minor leagues house three Top 100 Prospects: Binghamton (Double-A Mets), Eugene (High-A Giants), Akron (Double-A Guardians), St. Paul (Triple-A Twins) and Altoona (Double-A Pirates).
  • This year’s Top 100 Prospects are clustered predominantly at the upper levels. Twenty-eight players can be found in Triple-A, with 23 more at Double-A. High-A opens with 14 Top 100 Prospects on its rosters, and Low-A has just seven.
  • Ten of the Top 100 Prospects did not break camp with a full-season club, either due to injury or simply not being advanced enough to warrant such an assignment.
  • Two teams in the minors have two players who rank in the Top 50: Triple-A Omaha (Royals) with catcher MJ Melendez (43) and first baseman Nick Pratto (44), and Double-A Binghamton with catcher Francisco Alvarez (13) and third baseman Brett Baty (40).
