Trade Central: Guardians Pick Up Ian Hamilton, Twins Get Sandy Leon

In one of the more modest moves of the Aug. 2 trade deadline, the Twins acquired catching depth from a division rival, as the Guardians pick up a potentially useful Triple-A reliever.

TWINS RECEIVE

Sandy Leon, C
Age: 33

Leon is a third catcher at this point in his career, with a bottom-of-the-scale bat, but he is a reliable backstop for a team that needs catching depth. The Twins have lost Ryan Jeffers to a thumb injury, giving the team a need for veteran catcher depth. Leon has been outrighted off the 40-man roster this year, and will likely head to Triple-A St. Paul to provide emergency depth.

GUARDIANS RECEIVE

Ian Hamilton, RHP
Age: 27

The Twins claimed Hamilton on waivers in February, and the fact that he hasn’t earned a spot in a very thin Minnesota bullpen could be viewed as a knock against him. He struggled in a lone appearance with the Twins, but he’s been quite effective for Triple-A St. Paul. Hamilton relies heavily on an 85-90 mph slider, which helps his mid-90s fastball work as a second pitch. He’s a potential low-leverage reliever if everything clicks.
