Spring Training MLB Prospect Report—March 30, 2021

Akil Baddoo, OF, Tigers — Baddoo learned he officially made the Tigers Opening Day roster on Saturday, and he celebrated on Monday by hitting his fifth home run of the spring. Baddoo didn’t really give the Tigers much choice, as it’s hard to return a Rule 5 pick who is hitting .325/.460/.720. Baddoo has shown he can draw walks (10 in 50 plate appearances). He’s played all three outfield spots. He’s swiped four bases in six tries and flashed plus-plus speed. It’s been an excellent March for the newly-minted big leaguer.

Bryson Stott, 2B, Phillies — Stott hit his first home run for the big league club, helping to put a nice finish to a rough spring. Stott, the Phillies’ 2019 first-round pick, does not have any full season MiLB experience, so it’s not all that shocking that he’s been overmatched by MLB pitchers. After dipping to .087 on March 24, Stott has gone 3-for-5 in his last four games.

Nick Lodolo, LHP, Reds — Lodolo only threw 12 strikes in 25 pitches on Monday. He did manage to make those strikes count, as he still struck out three batters. It’s what the other six batters he faced did that caused some issues. Lodolo walked three, threw one wild pitch and gave up a double as he allowed two runs in 1.2 innings. His spring ERA climbed to 7.71.

Robert Hassell, OF, Padres — The Padres have thrown Hassell, one of the best hitters in the 2020 prep class, into the deep end of the pool, seeing if he can handle getting plenty of MLB spring training at-bats. As you might expect, the 19-year-old has been flailing at times. His OPS slipped to .318 at the end of an 0-for-12 streak earlier this month. Since then Hassell has mainly pinch ran and pinch hit, but he went 1-for-1 with a double and got to play center field on Monday. He raised his stat line to .130/.259/.217.

Michael Harris II, OF, Braves — Harris got a hit as a pinch hitter, raising his spring stat line to .278/.350/.500. Harris hasn’t seemed out of place with the big league club, which is notable because the 2019 third round pick has yet to play above low Class A, and even his low Class A time was a brief cameo. Harris has only struck out in 15 percent of his plate appearances (3 of 20).
