Spring Training MLB Prospect Report—March 11, 2021

Baltimore Orioles

—No. 29 prospect Tyler Nevin collected his first two hits of the spring against the Blue Jays and knocked in a run in the sixth inning. The 23-year-old first baseman arrived in Baltimore with shortstop Terrin Vavra and a player to be named later in the trade that netted the Rockies righthander Mychal Givens in late August.

Boston Red Sox

—No. 3 prospect Bobby Dalbec has played in seven games this spring and already has four home runs. His latest long ball was a grand slam in the sixth inning against the Braves. The 25-year-old masher has eight RBIs and has scored six times.

Cleveland Indians

—No. 1 prospect Triston McKenzie struck out two and walked one in three innings of one-run ball while allowing three hits. The 23-year-old righthander was excellent in 2020 and will assume a spot in the rotation again this season.

Colorado Rockies

—No. 7 prospect Colton Welker crushed his first home run of the spring, a three-run shot to left field in the sixth inning against the Padres. 

Detroit Tigers

—No. 6 prospect Isaac Paredes hit his first home run of the spring, a two-run shot in the first inning against the Phillies. After struggling to a .220/.278/.290 slash line in 100 at-bats in 2020, Paredes will look to get back on track in his second taste of the big leagues this season.

Miami Marlins

—No. 15 prospect Nick Neidert made his third appearance of the spring, striking out four batters, allowing a hit and a walk in three innings. Neidert has struck out eight in seven innings while allowing four hits and two walks.

Minnesota Twins

—No. 4 prospect Ryan Jeffers knocked in his first run this spring with an RBI double in the fifth inning against the Rays. The 23-year-old catcher impressed in 26 games as a rookie in 2020 and solidified himself as the Twins starting backstop moving forward.

Oakland Athletics

—No. 17 prospect Austin Allen picked up his first hit of the spring in a big way with a solo home run in the third inning against the Brewers. The 27-year-old catcher is competing to win a role as the backup to Sean Murphy after appearing in 14 games in 2020.

San Diego Padres

—No. 14 prospect Joshua Mears crushed a two-run home run off the bat at 117.3 mph to left field in the seventh inning against the Rockies. The athletic 20-year-old outfielder has impressive power, but must show he can get to it consistently. He should make his full-season debut in 2021.

Tampa Bay Rays

—No. 3 prospect Luis Patino pitched a scoreless inning of work against the Twins. The 21-year-old righthander, who was acquired with righthander Cole Wilcox and catchers Blake Hunt and Francisco Mejia from the Padres for all-star lefthander Blake Snell in the offseason, will likely be used in a variety of roles by the Rays this season.
