South Dakota State Hires Bishop As Coach
South Dakota State announced Monday it has hired Rob Bishop to be its head coach. Bishop comes to SDSU after spending the last six years as the coach of Montana State-Billings, a Division II school.
Bishop has been a head coach for the last 17 years, beginning with one season at Huron (S.D.), a now defunct NAIA school. He then spent 10 years at Miles (Mont.) CC, before moving to Montana State-Billings.
Now, Bishop will take his first Division I head coaching job, returning to South Dakota State, where he was a graduate assistant coach from 1997-1999. In a statement, he said he was grateful for the opportunity to return as the head coach of the Jackrabbits.
“I started my college coaching career with the Jacks as a graduate assistant and have followed the program closely since that time,” he said. “My family and I are excited to become part of the Brookings community.”
Bishop went 135-153-1 at Montana State-Billings, and guided the Yellowjackets to regular season conference championships in both of the last two years. They went 30-20 this season for their first-ever 30-win season.
Bishop takes over at SDSU from Dave Schrage, who left last month to become the head coach at Butler. The Jackrabbits went 22-35 this season and last made the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
