Rays Pry Duffy From Giants

ST. PETERSBURG—The Rays’ headline acquisition at the trade deadline was third baseman Matt Duffy, the 2015 rookie of the year runner-up in the National League. Tampa Bay has no plans to move him back to his original position of shortstop, however.

But the Rays were pleased with their overall haul from trading lefthander Matt Moore to the Giants, outfielder Brandon Guyer to the Indians and first baseman Steve Pearce to the Orioles. They added five players of varied prospect status to their system.

“If you take a snapshot of our system today compared to yesterday, we’re in much better shape,” general manager Matt Silverman said in discussing the deals. “We have more athleticism, we have some young arms and we have another catcher to add to the mix. It’s a good day for our minor league system.’’

The most intriguing addition was low Class A shortstop Lucius Fox, the fast, athletic, switch-hitter in whom the Giants invested about $10 million last year.

The 19-year-old Fox is a Bahamas native who came to Florida to play high school ball and take part in several showcase events. He then moved back to Nassau during his senior year to circumvent the draft and be classified as an international free agent. The Giants paid him a $6 million bonus (a record for a non-Cuban international amateur) and then about $4 million in penalty fees to Major League Baseball for exceeding their spending limits.

Fox came to the Rays with a left foot injury as the result of a foul ball that may sideline him for the rest of the season.

The Rays also added another solid, though not yet advanced, catching prospect from the Orioles in Jonah Heim, who joined high Class A Charlotte. Heim, a 2013 fourth-round pick from Amherst (N.Y.) Central High, has earned praise for his strong defensive skills, but he has yet to show enough with the bat.

The Orioles invited Heim to big league camp this year, where he made a solid impression on manager Buck Showalter.

COOL RAYS

• Both Rays catchers who made the Opening Day roster had been demoted to Triple-A, with Curt Casali following Hank Conger to Durham.

• The Rays promoted hard-throwing righthanded reliever Ryne Stanek, a 2013 first-round pick, to Triple-A.
