The Pirates announced Wednesday morning that they recalled 25-year-old righty Mike Burrows from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioned RHP Carmen Mlodzinski in a corresponding move. Burrows, the team’s No. 13 prospect entering the season, was off to a strong start this year, pitching to a 2.51 ERA with 41 strikeouts to 11 walks in 32.1 innings with Indianapolis. He’s coming off a truncated 2024 season amid a return from Tommy John surgery, although he reached Pittsburgh for his big league debut at the tail end of the season. Burrows’ four-pitch mix has firmed back up as he’s put more distance between himself and surgery. He leans on a mid-90s fastball, a solid-average slider that has emerged as a more consistent offering, an impressive changeup and his signature 12-6 curveball that he now uses more as a strike-stealer. Burrows has long been an interesting upper-minors arm in Pittsburgh’s system and now appears to finally have some runway to carve out a spot in the back of Pittsburgh’s rotation.
