Prospect Report: Mervis Continues To Mash, Pages and Julien Stay Hot

Matt Mervis, 1B, Cubs: The man affectionately known as “Mash” has continued his dream 2022 season, with a strong showing over the first four weeks of AFL play. In yesterday afternoon’s game Mervis hit his fifth home run of the fall, tying him for the AFL home run lead. After 11 Fall League contests, Mervis is hitting .308/.364/.744, with a remarkable three strikeouts over 39 at bats. 

Andy Pages, OF, Dodgers: The 21-year-old Pages faced an aggressive assignment to Double-A Tulsa this season and in someways outplayed his .236/.336/.468 slash line, as his 24.5% strikeout rate and 10.9% walk rate showed growth. Much of Pages’ struggles this season came down to luck, as his .270 batting average on balls in play depressed his overall line. Fast forward to AFL play and Pages is seeing the ball drop, as he’s hitting .333/.422/.593 with four home runs, and he’s tied for the league lead in runs. Pages went 3-for-5 last night with a double, his sixth-extra base hit in 14 games. 

Jackson Merrill, SS, Padres: After an injury-plagued season, Merrill headed to the AFL as one of the youngest players on the circuit. After hitting .325/.387/.482 with five home runs in 45 games at Low-A, Merrill has picked up where he left off, despite the age gap between the Padres infielder and the average age of AFL competition. Merrill went 2-for-5 last night with a stolen base to raise his AFL line to .308/.356/.431 with a home run, two triples and a double. 

Edouard Julien, 2B, Twins: Over the last week Julien has kicked his play into high gear, connecting for four home runs and driving in nine runs over his last five AFL contests. He’s now hitting .370/.525/.739 over 13 games with Glendale. Julien added to his total with a double and a stolen base in last night’s game. Julien is the definition of an on-base machine, with high walk rates throughout his professional career.
