Padres Trade With Mariners Again, Acquire Taylor Williams

Less than 24 hours after hooking up with the Mariners on a massive, seven-player deal, the Padres returned to the well in Seattle again.

The Padres acquired reliever Taylor Williams from the Mariners shortly before the trade deadline Monday. The Mariners received a player to be named later in return.

As part of their seven-player deal on Sunday, the Padres also acquired relievers Austin Adams and Dan Altavilla from the Mariners.

(Sept. 1 update: RHP Matt Brash has been identified as the player to be named later)

PADRES ACQUIRE

Taylor Williams, RHP
Age: 29

Williams spent three seasons with the Brewers prior to this season. He was claimed off waivers by the Mariners and posted a 5.93 ERA in 13 relief appearances this season. Williams shows promising underlying stuff but hasn’t translated it to production yet. His mid-90s fastball has gotten crushed the last two seasons and he generally struggles with wildness, including seven walks, three hit batters and six wild pitches in only 13.2 innings this year. His mid-80s slider is a dominant pitches that gets lots of swings and misses, so he’s still able to rack up strikeouts even with his issues. The Padres will see if they can get his fastball to play better and keep him in the strike zone more.

MARINERS ACQUIRE

Matt Brash, RHP
Age: 22

Brash won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference pitcher of the year award at Niagara last season and was drafted by the Padres in the fourth round. The Padres quickly sent him to low Class A Fort Wayne, he allowed one run in four relief appearances. Brash has loud stuff with a 93-96 mph sinker, a hard slider in the mid-80s and a power curveball in the upper 70s. His slider and curveball feature well above-average spin rates, with his slider projecting as a plus pitch. Brash could move quickly in relief with his fastball-slider combo, although he shows enough ingredients to start with three pitches and decent control.
