Welcome to another Opening Day.
We’ve been inundated with Opening Days. There was NCAA Division I Opening Day, which followed junior college and DII Opening Day. There was Spring Training Opening Day, MLB Opening Day and Triple-A Opening Day.
But today is MiLB Opening Day (Part II), the day in which baseball becomes a river of action that flows so fast that you can’t keep up with it all. Tonight we will have key Friday night college matchups competing with 15 MLB games and 60 MiLB games worth tracking.
That’s 100 games worth watching tonight if you’re a baseball nut.
It’s so much.
It’s too much.
It’s wonderful.
As I get older, the baseball season seems to move faster every year. I look up and suddenly we’re at the all-star break. Blink and the postseason will be here.
But it never grows old. There’s so much we’ll learn. We’ll be surprised numerous times over the next six months. At this time last year, Kristian Campbell was an intriguing, athletic middle infield prospect with real questions about his hit tool and power. By September, he was Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year and one of the best prospects in baseball. Now, he’s part of the Red Sox’s plans for the next eight seasons.
Who will be this year’s Kristian Campbell? I want to know. I’m excited to find out who will be this year’s Mickey Gasper or Payton Eeles or Jesus Made.
Some night this year, I’ll be sitting at an MiLB ballpark and be blown away seeing a prospect for the first time. There will be another morning where I get a call from Geoff Pontes or Josh Norris or Jesús Cano sharing a “I can’t believe I saw that” moment from the night before.
I can’t wait to chew over our in-season Top 100 Prospect lists as we try to make the best, most up-to-date rankings possible.
If you’re reading this, I’m guessing you also are fascinated by what is ahead. You are probably wondering how the draft’s first round will sort out or what the next big trend in pitching development will be or who will be the next big name to come over from Japan.
So are we. Because we’re baseball nuts writing for baseball nuts. Every day we try to think of what we want to know. Then we spend time finding out the answers to those questions to share what we learn with you all.
So thank you, fellow baseball nut. It’s for you that we exist. It’s also because of you that we continue to operate. We are a small, independent baseball website/magazine/YouTube site/podcaster/book publisher. Being that collection of things in the 21st century is a series of never-ending challenges.
The only reason it works is because we are crowdfunded by our readers. When you subscribe to Baseball America or get the magazine or purchase our Prospect Handbook, you allow us to pay our staff to cover all levels of the game. You are funding us to send writers to key college series, top high school matchups, spring training, MiLB and MLB games.
Without you all, none of this would be possible. You are what has given me my dream job for more than 20 years now. You’re what allows a group of diehard fans to spend 365 days a year thinking about, watching and reporting about baseball. In return, we want to make sure we work exceptionally hard to provide the content that fellow baseball fans love.
If you’re not currently one of our subscribers and you want to join us, we’d love to have you join the club. As a celebration of Opening Day, we’re offering a rare discount: 30% off on any annual subscription. Just use the code MiLB at checkout.
And for those who already subscribe, once again thank you. Enjoy Opening Day and every day of the baseball season that follows.
