Even at just 22 years old, Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez is one of the longest-tenured prospects in the sport. He debuted at the top of New York’s system soon after signing in 2019 and has never dipped below No. 3. He currently reigns at No. 1 for the Yankees, a spot he has occupied for four years.

Were it not for injuries—Tommy John surgery the biggest culprit—Dominguez might have already graduated from the prospect world. Instead, he’s racked up just 87 big league at-bats and will have to wait until the first weeks of the season to finally exhaust his prospect eligibility. For now, he sits at No. 28 among the Top 100 Prospects list, a ranking that suggests a big-time future.

On Thursday in a spring training road game against the Tigers, Dominguez got a test against a foe with a similarly- lofty ceiling: Tigers righthander Jackson Jobe, the sport’s No. 3 overall prospect.

Jobe and Dominguez share similarities. Both have the potential to headline their club’s next generation of players, with Jobe at the front of a rotation and Dominguez in the middle of a lineup. Each has big league experience—both in the regular season and playoffs—and each should exhaust their prospect eligibility at some point in 2025.

The pair faced off twice Tuesday, and Dominguez came away the big winner.

In his first at-bat, the switch-hitting outfielder lashed a 98 mph fastball back through the middle—just narrowly missing Jobe on the mound—that was snared by shortstop Trey Sweeney for a ground out.

In Dominguez’ second at-bat, the result again was loud contact. This time, however, the ball went high, deep and over the right field wall for Dominguez’s second home run of the Grapefruit League.

The pitch was a mistake—a changeup left over the middle of the plate—and Dominguez pounced, producing a 381-foot shot that left the bat at 101.2 mph. The blast was Dominguez’s eighth hit of the spring and second for extra bases.
