Dodgers Excited To Add Mike Sirota In Trade With Reds

The Dodgers’ deep farm system is built through their ability to identify talent domestically, internationally and in trades, where they routinely acquire talented prospects from other organizations.

The Dodgers grabbed Josiah Gray and Jeter Downs from the Reds in a 2018 trade that included Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp and Alex Wood. Two years later, Downs was dealt in a package to the Red Sox for Mookie Betts.

A year after that, Gray was traded to the Nationals to acquire Max Scherzer and Trea Turner.

Last winter, the Dodgers sent Michael Busch to the Cubs to acquire lefthander Jackson Ferris and outfielder Zyhir Hope. Both now rank as Top 100 Prospects.

The latest iteration of this trade occurred in January. Los Angeles traded Gavin Lux to the Reds for 22-year-old outfielder Mike Sirota and a 2025 supplemental first-round pick that is worth $2,386,900 in bonus pool money.

“Our scouting group was really high on him,” Dodgers GM Brandon Gomes said of Sirota, whom the Reds drafted in the 2024 third round out of Northeastern. “He had a slow start out the gate (as a college junior) and kind of finished strong.

“It’s electric hands, incredible athlete. There’s a lot of high-end talent there. Now it’s (about) harnessing it and getting to some swing work. But we had him as a slam-dunk first-rounder going into the year last year. That kind of fell.”

The Dodgers chose Florida high school shortstop Kellon Lindsey with the 23rd overall pick last year but did not choose again until pick No. 98. Sirota was drafted with the 87th pick.

“We had targeted him for a while, so to have the opportunity to get him into our system was something we were really excited about,” Gomes said.

Sirota opened his first pro season at Low-A Rancho Cucamonga, where he hit .333/.421/.621 with three home runs in 16 California League games.

The 29-year-old was the second overall pick in the 2016 draft and has played for the Reds, Nationals and White Sox over the past six seasons. He was playing in the Mexican League and went 13-for-22 in six games before signing with the Dodgers and reporting to Double-A Tulsa.
