Breakout Prospects
George Wolkow, OF
Preseason Rank: 17
BA Grade/Risk: 50/Extreme
Track Record: Wolkow once ranked as one of the top prep prospects in the 2024 class before he reclassified into the 2023 cycle. The White Sox made him their seventh-round selection that year and signed him to an over-slot $1 million bonus. Wolkow was just 18 years old for the entire 2024 season. He briefly returned to the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League before the White Sox aggressively pushed him to Low-A Kannapolis, where he hit .241/.342/.428 with 11 home runs but a 40.6% strikeout rate.
Scouting Report: It’s not hard to find differing opinions on what kind of hitter Wolkow will become. At 6-foot-7 and with very long levers, there will always be swing-and-miss to his game, but it comes with plus-plus raw power. Still, his 46.7% miss rate was the highest of any White Sox minor leaguer with 100 or more plate appearances and he missed 61.6% of the time against breaking balls. He generates plus bat speed and has worked on better controlling his swings. Wolkow also draws rave internal reviews for his makeup, work ethic and diligent postgame work. Defensively, he projects as an average defender with a plus arm in right field. He’s an average runner and better underway.
The Future: Wolkow is the epitome of a boom-or-bust prospect. He has age on his side and a very high ceiling if he can improve his strike-zone discipline and pitch recognition. He may benefit from a return to Low-A.
Scouting Grades: HIT: 40. POW: 70. RUN: 50. FLD: 50. ARM: 60.
Blake Larson, LHP
Preseason Rank: 26
BA Grade/Risk: 50/Extreme
Track Record: An Iowa native, Larson became a known commodity to the White Sox scouting staff by playing on the White Sox Area Code Games team prior to completing his high school career at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Chicago drafted him No. 68 overall in 2024 and Larson signed for $1.397 million instead of heading to Texas Christian. The 18-year-old did not make his pro debut, only appearing in a few instructional league games while prioritizing adding weight and strength to his frame.
Scouting Report: Larson’s lean body and lower three-quarter arm slot already invites comparisons to former White Sox lefthander Chris Sale. Larson’s 93-94 mph fastball was up to 96 in high school with sinking and running life. More velocity could be on the way as he adds strength. Larson’s main secondary is a low-80s sweepy slider that gets swings-and-misses with its high spin rate. It has been a chase pitch to lefties and a back-foot breaking ball to righties. His seldom-used upper-80s changeup needs development moving forward. Larson also needs to improve his below-average control and command from his effortful and sometimes erratic delivery.
The Future: Larson will be a slow burn. He’ll likely stay in Arizona next season for his pro debut in the Arizona Complex League.
