Cannon Ball! Kannapolis Announces Its New Name

After 19 years as the Intimidators, the White Sox’s affiliate has a new name. Starting in 2020, the team will play as . . . the Cannon Ballers.

The name and corresponding logo set were announced on Wednesday night at their home city’s historic Gem Theater, marking another step into the team’s future.

“After months of considering input from our fans and stakeholders, we are thrilled to introduce the Cannon Ballers. The new team name instills community pride and exemplifies the experience we want all of our guests to enjoy at the Kannapolis sports and entertainment venue,” team GM Matt Millward said in a press release. “Although the Cannon Ballers players and action on the field will always be the main event, the surrounding carnival of fun off the diamond will truly make a trip to our ballpark a memorable experience.”

The team’s identity, of course, is centered around the Cannon Baller character, a mustachioed man rocketing skyward in a star-emblazoned helmet and jumpsuit. Its home jersey will feature the full Cannon Ballers name, while an alternate version will shorten that name to “Ballers.”

Baller, of course, has a slick meaning of its own. According to the team release (and Drake) a Baller “refers to someone who started out from the bottom and made it to the top.”

Team gear is available online at KCBallers.com and at a team pop-up shop next to the Gem Theatre located at 111 West 1st Street in downtown Kannapolis daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Oct. 27. The Cannon Ballers open their first season on April 16.
