Boston Red Sox 2025 International Class Scouting Report

With the MLB international signing period opening today, teams can officially begin to sign players in their 2025 class.

For Baseball America subscribers, we have scouting reports and player notes on the classes for all 30 teams, providing information on the big names to know in each class, as well as deeper cut players to watch.

In 2023, Boston’s international signing class included Dominican shortstop Yoeilin Cespedes ($1.4 million) and Venezuelan shortstop Franklin Arias ($525,000). Now both are top 10 prospects in the organization with Arias entering the Top 100 prospects list.

Their 2025 class is another exciting group. The highest paid player in the group will be Dorian Soto, a switch-hitting shortstop from the Dominican Republic getting $1.4 million. Soto is 6-foot-3, 185 pounds and might not be done growing, so while he has the hands and footwork to handle the infield, his future is more likely at third base than shortstop with some risk he could move lower on the defensive spectrum depending on just how big he gets. The offensive upside is the draw with Soto, a switch-hitter with explosive bat speed and big power potential. Scouts highest on Soto liked his ability to manipulate the barrel to make contact, as well.

Venezuelan center fielder Harold Rivas is a more athletic, dynamic talent than Soto and should stick at a premium position. At 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, Rivas is a tool shed with plus speed, a quick first step and a plus arm. He moves around with ease in the outfield and projects as a potential plus defender. Rivas continues to get stronger, showing the bat speed and strength projection to project 20-plus homers in his future. Some scouts had concerns about his ability to handle soft stuff, but if he performs well in the Dominican Summer League, he could be a big riser for the Red Sox.

Dominican shortstop Hector Ramos, signing for $500,000, has been an up-arrow prospect. He has hit well in games with good hand-eye coordination to make frequent contact and has the defensive tools that give him a chance to stick at shortstop. Venezuelan shortstop Eliezer Alfonzo is a 5-foot-11 shortstop who sprays line drives to all fields from both sides of the plate with gap power. He’s an instinctive player with the actions to handle a middle infield spot, whether it’s at shortstop or second base. Venezuelan 6-foot-5 righthander Sadbiel Delzine is one of the top pitchers available this year. Dominican righthander Dalvinson Reyes has been a promising pitcher the Red Sox signed in their 2024 class, but Delzine is even a little bit bigger, has bigger present stuff (up to 94 mph) despite being younger and even greater upside. Christopher Cordero from the Dominican Republic ($400,000) is an athletic, flexible 6-foot righthander with a lively fastball up to 92 mph and tight rotation on a sharp curveball.
