Baseball America Prospect Report — September 6, 2021

Going into the top of the ninth inning, Hudson Valley had its game with Greensboro seemingly well in hand. After the top of the ninth, the game had gone from an easy win to a once-in-a-lifetime memory. Hudson Valley scored 14 runs in the top of the ninth for a 23-4 win. The Renegades sent 23 batters to the plate that inning. Three of the first four hitters that half inning hit home runs. Before long third baseman Andres Alvarez was asked to try to finish the game out for Greensboro--he soon gave up a home run to Carlos Navarez. Five batters later, Everson Pereira hit the second grand slam of the inning. Hudson Valley hit 10 home runs overall.

Everson Pereira, CF, Yankees: Pereira hit three home runs on Sunday including his grand slam in the ninth inning. He scored five runs and drove in six.

Anthony Volpe, SS, Yankees: Volpe hit his 24th home run of the season (and 12th since he was promoted to High-A).

Masyn Winn, RHP, Cardinals: For the first time as a pro, Winn pitched on Sunday, making him the two-way player the Cardinals have long said he will be. Winn played shortstop on Saturday, so St. Louis is letting him work on both at the same time. Winn’s first inning of relief work was an impressive one. Baseball America correspondent Emily Waldon was at the game and reported that Winn was sitting 96-98 mph in his one inning of work.

Riley Greene, RF, Tigers: Greene had the best game of his still brief time in Triple-A. He hit a pair of home runs for Toledo against Omaha. The ball was flying for Toledo on Sunday.

Spencer Torkelson, 1B, Tigers: Torkelson also homered, his sixth since he was promoted to Triple-A. Torkelson is hitting only .203 since his promotion to the Mud Hens in mid-August.

Kody Clemens, 2B, Tigers: Clemens also homered twice for Toledo. Omaha reliever Scott Blewett gave up four home runs in just 2.1 innings.

Patrick Romeri, CF, Cardinals: The 20-year-old had the best game of his season on Sunday. Romeri went 4-for-6 with a double and two home runs against Low-A Dunedin.

Elijah Cabell, RF, Cardinals: Romeri was one of two Palm Beach Cardinals to hit a pair of home runs on Sunday. Cabell, the Cardinals’ 17th-round pick out of Florida State, has only hit one home run in his first 17 pro games before hitting two on Sunday.

Jasson Dominguez, DH, Yankees: Dominguez’s first pro season has had some highlights, but has overall been pretty low-key. Dominguez is finishing his season strong however. His three-hit Sunday included his fifth home run for Low-A Tampa. It also was his third straight multi-hit game.

Francisco Alvarez, C, Mets: Alvarez’s excellent weekend continued on Sunday with his 20th home run of the season.

Owen White, RHP, Rangers: The Low-A Down East club has had some fun this week battling Kannapolis. White was the best of a run of good starts from Down East starters this week. White held Kannapolis scoreless over five innings. He struck out 12 of the 19 batters he faced.

Spencer Strider, RHP, Braves: Strider began his 2021 season at Low-A Augusta, then was promoted to High-A Rome and then to Double-A Mississippi. Double-A has been the first real challenge Strider has faced this year. Strider’s last two starts give a strong indication he’s adapting to the test. Strider struck out eight and allowed only three baserunners (two hits and one walk) in five scoreless innings against Biloxi. Strider has struck out 18 and walked two in his last 10 innings.

Kevin Padlo, 3B, Mariners: Padlo was designated for assignment by the Rays as he stumbled through a very poor season with Triple-A Durham. The Mariners claimed him on waivers, and are giving him a chance to revitalize what once looked to be a promising career. So far, he’s off to a fine start with his new team. He homered twice on Sunday and is now hitting .357/.514/.679 in 8 games with Tacoma.

In Case You Missed It

On Friday, Red Sox 1B Triston Casas homered three times in a doubleheader with Double-A Portland. He had hit only three home runs in June, July and August combined (not counting the Olympics) so September is off to an excellent start. It got even better on Saturday . . . Cubs 1B Bryce Ball has had the same issues hitting for average since he was acquired from the Braves. But he does still have significant power. Ball homered as part of a 3-for-3 night . . . Orioles SS Jordan Westburg has struggled since he was promoted to Double-A Bowie. Westburg went 2-for-4 with a triple and home run on Friday. But that was his first multi-hit game in 16 games since he was promoted to Bowie . . . Rockies OF Zac Veen went 2-for-4 with four stolen bases in four tries . . . Mets C Francisco Alvarez hit his 19th home run of the season.

Angels RHP Davis Daniel continues his remarkable work for Double-A Rocket City. Daniel gave up a two-run home run to Harrison Wenson but otherwise was in complete control. He struck out 11 and walked no one in six innings. Daniel has struck out 66 and walked eight in 47 innings since his promotion to Rocket City . . . Rays LHP Ian Seymour’s second High-A start for Bowling Green was similar to his first. He gave up a solo home run to Isaias Quiroz but otherwise gave up only one other hit in five innings. He struck out nine and walked one. He now has 78 strikeouts and 15 walks in 45 innings this year . . . Cleveland LHP Adam Scott, the Indians’ fourth-round pick out of Wofford in 2018, held Altoona hitless for six innings . . . Mariners LHP Brandon Williamson gave up one hit and three walks in six scoreless innings with Double-A Arkansas. He struck out eight . . . Rays RHP Shane Baz’s consistency is impressive. He allowed two runs, one of which was earned, in five innings. He’s given up one earned run or less in eight of his nine starts with Triple-A Durham . . . Orioles RHP Grayson Rodriguez gave up one hit in five scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to Double-A Bowie to 2.76.

On Saturday, Casas kept up his outstanding weekend. Casas homered twice more on Saturday, giving him five home runs in two days . . . Orioles 1B Billy Cook hit three home runs for Low-A Delmarva . . . Dodgers 2B Michael Busch homered twice on Saturday for Double-A Tulsa. He also had a four-hit game on Friday . . . Yankees 1B Anthony Garcia hit two home runs on Saturday. He now has five home runs in just 10 games since he was promoted to Low-A Tampa . . . Orioles DH Colton Cowser went 3-for-6 with a double and a home run.

There’s been little remarkable about Red Sox LHP Jay Groome’s 2021 season. He just lowered his High-A ERA under 5.00 in his last start there, but his first Double-A start with Portland proved to be his best of the season. Groome set a season high with 10 strikeouts in five scoreless innings against New Hampshire . . . Fresh off his worst start of the year (four runs and four hits in one inning against Corpus Christi), Mariners RHP George Kirby had one of his best. Kirby held Double-A Wichita to four hits in six scoreless innings. He walked no one and struck out seven . . . Rangers RHP Nick Krauth is finishing strong. He threw a nine-inning complete game in his previous start. This Saturday he gave up one unearned run to Kannapolis in six innings. He struck out 11.
