Baseball America Prospect Report -- September 26, 2018

Tuesday's Stars

Ryan O'Hearn, 1B, Royals. The conundrum of O'Hearn is becoming even more confusing, which is a good thing for the Royals. O'Hearn went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run yesterday. He now has 12 home runs in just 133 at-bats and is hitting .271/.366/.639 for the Royals. There's no doubt O'Hearn is hitting better than his actual ability so far -- his slugging percentage is not only 168 points better than his career minor league numbers, it's also better than any batting qualifier in the majors. But even though it's only 40 games, O'Hearn has been good enough in a lengthy enough big league stint that he's logically the Royals first baseman for 2019. There were scouts who believed O'Hearn could be a solid everyday first baseman when he was coming up through the minors, even if his minor league stats didn't always match those expectations.

Brandon Lowe, 2B, Rays. If O'Hearn's start is a story to remember about not getting too excited about a great first 50 games. Lowe is a reminder that we also shouldn't get too concerned when a rookie gets off a horrendous start. Lowe went hitless in his first six big league games, going 0-for-19. But he has settled in since then. Lowe went 3-for-3 yesterday with two doubles. He's hitting .279/.343/.672 this month and is hitting .248/.349/.505 overall in the major leagues.

Miguel Andujar, 3B, Yankees. Andujar hit his 26th home run of the season yesterday. Andujar has 71 extra-base hits this season, showing consistent power throughout an excellent rookie season.

Hunter Dozier, 3B, Royals. Dozier hit his 11th home run yesterday. Dozier has hit a little better this month, but he still is hitting .228/.247/.468 in September. His inability to hit for average and get-on base this year has to be a concern for the Royals as they try to figure out their 2019 lineup.

To describe the Rays solely as scrappy underdogs is to shortchange their talent.
