Sunday's Stars

Brad Keller, RHP, Royals. Keller's final start of the season was another excellent one as he allowed one run over seven innings on only three hits and three walks. But he also struck out only two batters. Keller has walked 3.2 batters per nine innings (a little worse than average as 3 BB/9 is average for a starter) and he's struck out 6.2 per nine innings, which is well below average (8.2 K/9 this season for starters). Those would not seem to be the peripheral numbers for a very successful starter, but Keller's 9-6, 3.08 season has been a bright spot in a very rough one for the Royals. He does an excellent job of keeping the ball in the park (0.45 home runs per nine innings, where the average starter gives up 1.2 HR/9) and he pitches with a plus fastball, so there are reasons to believe he can sustain success.

Victor Robles, CF, Nationals. Robles went 2-for-6 with a triple and a home run for his best day as a big leaguer. He's still hitting only .227/.286/.432 in 49 big league plate appearances, but his combination of speed, defense and potential at the plate make him a viable option to be the Nationals everyday center fielder in 2019, even after an injury-plagued 2018. With Robles, Soto and Adam Eaton (plus Michael Taylor) the Nationals are equipped to handle losing Bryce Harper in free agency, especially with Soto establishing himself as a star at the plate.

Scott Kingery, SS, Phillies. The Phillies are collapsing like a supernova as the season ends with a 6-15 September so far. Philadelphia has gone from battling for the NL East crown to battling to finish above .500 (they are currently 78-77) and to finish second, as they are only a half game ahead of the Nationals. As the Phillies head into the offseason, they also have to figure out what role Kingery will play in 2019 both in the field (where he's primarily played shortstop after never playing that position at any time in the minors or college) and at the plate, where he's failed to post a OPS better than .660 in any month this season. But Kingery did hit his eighth homer run of the season yesterday.
