Baseball America Prospect Report — August 24, 2021

(Editor’s Note: This post has been corrected to reflect that Steele Walker came to the Rangers in the Nomar Mazara trade, not the Lance Lynn trade.)

Steele Walker, Triple-A Round Rock (Rangers) — The Rangers got Walker, an outfielder who grew up in Texas and was selected by Chicago in the second round of the 2018 draft out of Oklahoma, from the White Sox in the deal that brought outfielder Nomar Mazara to Chicago. Walker has shown plenty of flashes of his potential as a pro, including Monday night, when he slammed two home runs for his first multi-homer game of the season.

Alek Thomas, Triple-A Reno (D-backs) — Very quietly, Thomas has put together an excellent season. The 21-year-old plays superb defense in center field, and this season put together an .881 OPS at Double-A Amarillo. Yes, the line was buoyed a bit by Amarillo’s home park, which is a Shangri-La for hitters, but he also had an .831 OPS in the rest of the Double-A Central parks before his promotion to Reno. He’s one of just five 21-year-olds this season with 15 or more doubles, five or more triples and 10 or more home runs.

Yaifer Perdomo, FCL Blue Jays — Usually, if a team has a collective wish, it would be centered around winning a championship or perhaps adding a key player in trade. If you asked the FCL Tigers West, their fondest fantasy would be to never see Blue Jays lefty Yaifer Perdomo again. In his last two starts, Perdomo has stripped the Tigers of their stripes and sent them back to their den looking less like Shere Khan and more like Garfield (yesterday was a Monday, after all). Combining those two outings, Perdomo has gone nine shutout innings, allowed two hits and walked four while striking out 22.

But that’s not all. Perdomo has faced the Tigers West two other times this season. If you add up all four outings, he’s thrown 18 innings, allowed three runs, walked six and whiffed 35. Perdomo gets his outs by commanding a 90-94 mph fastball with excellent life which gets hitters to swing and miss quite frequently—he boasts a 43% swinging-strike rate—as well as a curveball and changeup. The curveball is further along than the changeup and could project to average.

Fifty-nine percent of Perdomo’s strikeouts this year have come against the Tigers West, whose members I assume have pleaded with Toronto officials to move him to Low-A and end his reign over them.
