The American League East still has the best farm system in baseball, but the crown has shifted to Boston entering the 2025 season following Baltimore’s two-year run atop the preseason rankings.

The Red Sox rank No. 1 for the first time since Baseball America began its annual preseason farm system talent rankings over 40 years ago in 1984. Boston boasts three of baseball’s 15 best prospects even after this winter’s blockbuster Garrett Crochet deal.

Detroit ranks second, which is also a high-water mark for the organization after previously topping out at No. 4 entering the 2021 season. The Tigers are fresh off a surprise postseason run and have now produced a top-five farm system in four of the last five seasons.

Baseball America’s farm system rankings come on the heels of our preseason Top 100 and Top 30 Prospects for every organization. You can see where every system ranks below.

1. Boston Red Sox

Top Prospect: Roman Anthony, OF

The Red Sox have returned to the top of the farm system rankings, even after dealing four prospects to the White Sox to bring Garrett Crochet to Boston. No other organization can match the trio of Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer, and Boston’s pitching depth has improved as well.

2. Detroit Tigers

Top Prospect: Jackson Jobe, RHP

The cohesiveness in the Tigers’ scouting and player development departments is paying off in a steady stream of big league contributors. Tarik Skubal’s Cy Young Award is a notable PD win. Jackson Jobe, Max Clark and Kevin McGonigle have high ceilings and aren’t all that far away. They could provide a big boost in 2025 and 2026.

3. Los Angeles Dodgers

Top Prospect: Roki Sasaki, RHP

Trades have thinned the Dodgers somewhat, but the top of the crop is plenty strong and only got better after landing No. 1 overall prospect Roki Sasaki, even if we don’t expect him to remain a prospect for long. Dalton Rushing and Alex Freeland otherwise lead the way ahead of a trio of young, interesting outfielders in the lower levels. The organization is balanced from top to bottom but also is hurt by injuries that will keep big league-ready pitchers out for the year.

4. Chicago White Sox

Top Prospect: Noah Schultz, LHP

This farm system is steadily trending up, which has to be the expectation following a 121-loss season and with almost every big leaguer of note traded. A bounce-back season from Colson Montgomery and productive ones from new acquisitions Kyle Teel and Braden Montgomery could kickstart the long climb to respectability.

5. Seattle Mariners

Top Prospect: Colt Emerson, SS

After years of matriculating elite starting pitchers, the Mariners have stocked up on promising young hitters, including first-rounders Colt Emerson, Cole Young and Harry Ford. International scouting has filled in gaps with Michael Arroyo, Felnin Celesten and Lazaro Montes. Seattle shifted its focus back to pitchers in the 2024 draft.

6. Tampa Bay Rays

Top Prospect: Carson Williams, SS

The Rays’ dip in farm system talent was a brief one. The decision to trade Randy Arozarena, Zach Eflin, Jason Adam and others at the 2024 deadline brought in a wide array of high-ceiling prospects. But the development of young homegrown arms such as Trevor Harrison and Gary Gill Hill has also provided a needed boost.

7. Cleveland Guardians

Top Prospect: Travis Bazzana, 2B

Cleveland’s system is one of the deepest in the game. The organization remains a pitching development factory and continues to add impact talent in the draft and international market. The top 10 is stuffed with high-confidence hitters and led by No. 1 overall draft pick Travis Bazzana and Venezuelan center fielder Jaison Chourio.

8. Minnesota Twins

Top Prospect: Walker Jenkins, OF

Winning a draft lottery pick that turned into Walker Jenkins gave the Twins their highest-ceiling prospect in years, and Emmanuel Rodriguez looks like another potential cornerstone if he can overcome injury issues. But Minnesota’s most impressive feat has been its ability to steadily draft and develop later-round college pitchers.

9. Milwaukee Brewers

Top Prospect: Jesus Made, SS

Even after a series of prospect graduations led by future star Jackson Chourio, the Brewers are still in a strong position on the farm. One of the game’s best international programs continues to pump talent into the system, with Dominican shortstop Jesus Made their latest potential star signing atop their list.

10. Cincinnati Reds

Top Prospect: Rhett Lowder, RHP

The Reds have built a pitching pipeline thanks to investing draft and trade capital. By the end of 2025, the Reds could have a rotation filled with homegrown arms, led by first-rounders Hunter Greene, Rhett Lowder, Chase Burns and Nick Lodolo. Now, the system needs to churn out a few big league-ready bats.

11. Athletics

Top Prospect: Nick Kurtz, 1B

The Athletics’ system is headlined by first-rounders Nick Kurtz and Jacob Wilson, and the organization’s depth is stronger entering 2025. It’s paramount that the A’s hit on both Kurtz and Wilson considering it remains an open question as to whether they’ve produced enough high-end talent to sustain a long-term winner.

Top Prospect: Jett Williams, SS

Many of the Mets’ top position prospects—Jett Williams, Jesus Baez, Ronny Mauricio—missed time with injuries in 2024, but a strength-in-numbers farm system pushes New York toward the middle of the talent pack. College pitcher draftees Brandon Sproat, Nolan McLean and Blade Tidwell are on the cusp of MLB.

First-rounder Chase Dollander cemented himself as one of the most promising pitching prospects in the game, and Colorado landed College Player of the Year Charlie Condon in the draft. The Rockies continue to be a well-oiled machine on the international market and have a surprising amount of pitching depth overall.

14. Washington Nationals

Top Prospect: Dylan Crews, OF

Outfielder Dylan Crews is one of the top prospects in the game and carries a lot of weight in a system that remains a bit top-heavy, though righthanders Travis Sykora and Jarlin Susana offer hope that the organization can add much-needed pitching depth in the near future.

15. Chicago Cubs

Top Prospect: Matt Shaw, 3B

The top of the Cubs’ system is stocked with ready-made big league pieces and potential trade chips. Chicago is thin on pitching, outside of top arm Cade Horton, but boasts a deep group of young middle infielders with upside. It’s a top-half system lacking a truly transcendent talent, especially after trading away 3B Cam Smith to the Astros in the Kyle Tucker trade.

16. Pittsburgh Pirates

Top Prospect: Bubba Chandler, RHP

Pittsburgh’s pitching development machine rolls on. Bubba Chandler is the latest Pirates arm to rank among the game’s top pitching prospects, and more upper-level pitching talent lines up behind him. Pittsburgh’s hitting depth faces far more scrutiny, making 2024 first-rounder Konnor Griffin a key focal point.

The Orioles no longer have the game’s top farm system after graduating the likes of Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Jordan Westburg, Colton Cowser and Jackson Holliday. Samuel Basallo and Coby Mayo still offer promise, but Baltimore must develop extremely well to rebuild some of the depth lost in trades.

The Cardinals must have felt like they won the lottery when top college shortstop JJ Wetherholt dropped to them at No. 7 overall in 2024. He heads a system with a balance of proximity pitching and Rookie-level position standouts. Yairo Padilla and Rainiel Rodriguez offer the organization two potential future Top 100 Prospects.

19. Texas Rangers

Top Prospect: Kumar Rocker, RHP

A year after graduating two premier prospects—Wyatt Langford and Evan Carter—the Rangers once again front their system with an enviable duo: Kumar Rocker and Sebastian Walcott. Texas also got breakout years from Alejandro Rosario, Emiliano Teodo and Winston Santos, each of whom could crack the big leagues in 2025.

20. Philadelphia Phillies

Top Prospect: Andrew Painter, RHP

Even after two years away, Andrew Painter remains one of the best overall pitching prospects. He leads a strong top end that also includes upstart infielder Aidan Miller and slugging catcher Eduardo Tait. There’s balance up and down the organization even after trades jettisoned Starlyn Caba, Sam Aldegheri and George Klassen.

21. Miami Marlins

Top Prospect: Thomas White, LHP

The quick turnover in the Marlins’ front office in recent years has led to instability, but the organization’s inability to draft, develop and hold on to its first-rounders hasn’t helped. Kahlil Watson, JJ Bleday, Trevor Rogers and Josh Naylor all play for other teams, and the Marlins got little in return. Adding Starlyn Caba helps, but Miami still has just two Top 100 Prospects coming off a 62-win season in 2024.

22. Arizona Diamondbacks

Top Prospect: Jordan Lawlar, SS

Shortstop Jordan Lawlar would have graduated by now if not for a string of injuries. He just needs a year of health to give Arizona another boost. Behind him, the system has had some solid success stories—Demetrio Crisantes and Yilber Diaz—but the struggles of first-rounders Druw Jones and Tommy Troy hurt the system’s top tier.

23. Toronto Blue Jays

Top Prospect: Ricky Tiedemann, LHP

The Blue Jays had about as rough a 2024 as one could have from an injury perspective. Ricky Tiedemann, Landen Maroudis and Brandon Barriera all had elbow surgery, and Orelvis Martinez was suspended for PEDs. The team has a group of talented but unheralded players in its Top 10 in Arjun Nimmala, Josh Kasevich and Alan Roden.

24. San Francisco Giants

Top Prospect: Bryce Eldridge, 1B

Bryce Eldridge is one of the best prospects going, but beyond him are questions. Mason Black and Grant McCray give San Francisco some big league-ready options, and Marco Luciano remains a giant wild card. Carson Whisenhunt should make his MLB debut soon, and a rebound from Rayner Arias would boost the Giants’ fortunes.

25. New York Yankees

Top Prospect: Jasson Dominguez, OF

Jasson Dominguez is a clear No. 1 in the system, which is going to need a serious rebound after injuries and underperformance abounded in 2024. The players who graduated—Luis Gil and Austin Wells—finished first and third for the AL Rookie of the Year award. The 2024 draft injected the system with a host of physical college arms.

26. San Diego Padres

Top Prospect: Leodalis De Vries, SS

The Padres system is headlined by two potential high-impact big leaguers in Leodalis De Vries and Ethan Salas, though there is a sizable gap between that duo and the rest of the system. A quartet of 2024 draft picks have assumed positions inside the top 10, headlined by southpaw Kash Mayfield.

27. Kansas City Royals

Top Prospect: Jac Caglianone, 1B

The Royals are basking in the glow of an exceptional step forward in 2024. Bobby Witt Jr. is a young superstar to build around, but the Royals’ farm system remains thin on potential regulars, especially when it comes to hitters. Much rests on first baseman Jac Caglianone and catcher Blake Mitchell meeting expectations.

Top Prospect: Drake Baldwin, C

The Braves’ system is headlined by a strong 1-2 punch with catcher Drake Baldwin and righthander AJ Smith-Shawver, but other prospects at the top are either far away, have limited upside or come with plenty of injury risk. The system has plenty of pitching depth, but impact hitters are hard to come by.

Top Prospect: Cam Smith, 3B

The cupboard has been bare in Houston for a few seasons even if adding Cam Smith provides a much-needed jolt. Despite a lack of talent, few organizations have done more to coax value out of players the last five seasons. A strong group of platoon hopefuls in Jacob Melton, Brice Matthews and Zach Dezenzo could factor for the 2025 Astros.

Top Prospect: Caden Dana, RHP

The Angels regularly hover near the bottom of these rankings. Some of that is because the organization calls up players like Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel much earlier than other organizations would. The decision to not trade Shohei Ohtani in 2023 to restock the system still stings.
