How Slot Values Are Determined

The slot values for the draft are determined each year by matching growth in revenues in baseball. This year’s slots values were announced a few weeks later than has become typical. Sources told Baseball America there was a dispute of the revenue growth between the league and the MLB Players Association causing the delay.

Ultimately, this year’s slots and bonus pools come with a 4.8% increase. The year-over-year slot value increase from the 2023 draft to the 2024 draft was an 8.7% increase

The Nationals’ first-overall pick in 2025 comes with a slot value of $11,075,900 compared to a 2024 first overall pick slot value of $10,570,600.

That leaves plenty of room for a player to break the draft bonus record and still sign a significantly underslot deal. Two players signed for a new record bonus in the 2024 draft, as Reds No. 2 overall pick Chase Burns and Rockies No. 3 overall pick Charlie Condon both signed $9.25 million signing bonuses to break the $9.2 million mark set by Pirates No. 1 pick Paul Skenes in 2023.

Breaking Down The Largest & Smallest Bonus Pools

Picking third overall in the first round, the Mariners have the largest bonus pool to work with. Their $17,074,400 pool total comes thanks to being the highest drafting team with a supplemental round pick. Their first supplemental round pick at 35 overall comes with a $ 2,758,300 slot value.

The Rays have the second largest pool in the draft despite a first pick that comes just 14th overall. Tampa Bay has multiple picks in the supplemental first round after the Athletics parted with the 42nd overall pick in the Jeffrey Springs trade. Additionally, the Rays have the 67th overall pick, which is a compensation pick for not signing Tyler Bell with the 66th overall selection in 2024.

The Angels check in with the third largest pool in the draft despite picking second overall thanks to a compensation pick following the third round that comes from not signing No. 81 overall pick Ryan Prager in 2024.

Other teams with multiple picks inside the first 50 picks include the Orioles, Brewers, Royals and Red Sox. Each of these teams will have the pick capital and bonus pool space to get either more aggressive or more creative than the teams picking around them in the draft order.

The Yankees and Mets have the smallest bonus pools in this year’s draft and are the only two teams with less than $6 million to spend. In additional to neither having their second-round picks, both teams had their first-round picks fall 10 spots after exceeding the second surcharge of the luxury tax in 2024. The Yankees lost their second-round pick and the compensation pick for Juan Soto after signing Max Fried. The Mets lost their second-round pick and the compensation pick for Luis Severino after signing Soto.

The Astros, Blue Jays, D-backs, Giants, Padres and Red Sox were other teams who lost their second round picks after signing qualified free agents.

Slot Values For 2025

In the MLB draft, each pick inside the first 10 rounds comes with assigned slot values. The sum of those slot values creates each team’s bonus pool. From rounds 11-20, players can sign for up to $150,000 without counting towards the bonus pool. Anything beyond that value does count towards the pool.

Teams are free to sign players for more than an assigned slot value or less than an assigned slot value, though going over a bonus pool comes with penalties. Most teams spend up to 5% more than their allotted pool, but exceeding the 5% overage comes with said pick penalties. So far in the bonus pool era, no team has yet been willing to go over that 5% threshold and incur the penalty.
