2021 Colorado Rockies Instructional League Roster
The Rockies' instructional league roster features a glut of talented outfielders, led by the previous two seasons' first-round picks, Zac Veen and Benny Montgomery. Veen was among the most impressive prospects this year in the Low-A West, where he showcased a tooled-up skill set that includes plenty of power and speed. Montgomery, whom Colorado chose eighth overall in 2021, had some of the loudest tools in the draft, including double-plus foot speed and some of the best overall bat speed in the class. He could put on a Veen-esque show next year. Lurking behind both Veen and Montgomery is Yanquiel Fernandez, another toolsy outfielder who performed well in the Dominican Summer League. The 18-year-old Fernandez finished seventh on the circuit with a .946 OPS, and his 17 doubles were the best in the league.
The Rockies' position player group also boasts a pair of high-end catchers in Drew Romo, whose outstanding defensive chops were on display this year with Low-A Fresno, and Hunter Goodman, whom the Rockies chose out of Memphis in this year's fourth round.
On the pitching side, watch out for long-levered lefty Helcris Olivarez, who has one of the fastest arms around but has mechanics not unlike the wacky, wild arm-flailing tube men of used car lot lore. Unlike his cylindrical compatriots, Olivarez pairs an upper-90s fastball with a wipeout breaking ball and already occupies a spot on the Rockies' 40-man roster.
