View Draft Report
Puerto Rico seems to have a handful of promising defensive catchers every single year, with many of them going towards the back of the top ten rounds in the draft or soon after the tenth. Mercado is a smooth, steady defender and should stick behind the plate long term. Scouts on the island note that he isn't as explosive as fellow Puerto Rican catcher Santis Sanchez, but Mercado shows above-average arm strength and is a steady receiver. He has a flat bat path and a compact swing that's geared for contact. Mercado doesn't have a ton of power and has limited track record hitting with a wood bat against quality pitching. He's young for the class and won't turn 18 until August.
