Ottesen, who helped lead American Fork (Utah) High to a 2012 state title, was eligible last year (but not drafted) after having served a two-year LDS mission in Japan. He returned with erratic control but a fastball up to 97 mph while working primarily out of the bullpen, but he finished 2016 strong with seven strikeouts in a regional game against Tulane. Ottesen moved into the rotation in 2017 and got off to a splendid start before posting a 1-3, 6.11 mark in Pac-12 play. Ottesen has a loose, lightning-quick arm on his 6-foot, 185-pound frame and generates 96-97 mph heat, even as a starter. HIs slider at times will reach up to 86-87 mph and flash plus as well, though not consistently. Despite two plus pitches and good athleticism, Ottesen gets hit and struck out just 6.3 per nine innings. His delivery lacks deception and he struggles to pitch inside with conviction. Most scouts consider him a future reliever.
