A native of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, Medina moved to Arizona, but pitched only part of his senior year at Tucson's Sahuaro High before being ruled ineligible by the state athletic association because of visa issues. Despite that, scouts have seen enough of him to be intrigued by his potential. He doesn't blow hitters away with his 88-90 mph fastball, but it plays up thanks to his feel for the craft, command and ease with which he repeats his delivery. Medina has advanced feel for an effective curveball and changeup. Medina continued to throw for scouts after the premature end of his high school career, keeping the Arizona commit on the radar.
