Howell spent two years at Oregon State (redshirting once and playing five games in another season) before transferring to Chabot (Calif.) JC and then Nevada. The Wolf Pack decided 10 days before the season began to shift him to second base from left field, and the move paid off as Howell did his best vintage Dan Uggla impersonation, slugging and defending adequately as Nevada won the Mountain West Conference regular season. However, Howell struggled defensively and at the plate down the stretch, hurting his draft stock and hurting the Wolf Pack, who were snubbed at NCAA tournament time. Howell's lone carrying tool is plus raw power; he hits them high and far, when he makes contact. He's fairly stiff at the plate, even more so in the field and will move left field or first base as a pro. His susceptibility to offspeed stuff combined with his pull-centric approach leads to strikeouts in bunches at times.
