Rubick was drafted by the Indians in the 27th round out of high school in 2015. He began his college career at Arizona before transferring back to his hometown and attending Ventura (Calif.) JC. Rubick features a 92-93 mph fastball but it is extremely straight. He also has poor control. As a result he got knocked around for a 6.32 ERA in his lone season on the JC circuit, although he did average more than a strikeout per inning. Evaluators largely do not feel Rubick has improved since high school, but his arm strength and previous familiarity have teams checking in on him. He is committed to Hawaii.

Rubick has de-committed from Cal State Northridge and signed with Arizona, though that commitment appeared to be in doubt after the retirement of Andy Lopez. Rubick may be ready for pro ball anyway out of high school, as he had a strong spring and has added physicality to his 6-foot-4, 210-pound frame. He's regularly bumped 93 mph this spring while sitting in the 87-91 mph range with his fastball and has a loose arm. His frame and arm action have scouts projecting more velocity to come. If he doesn't go out early, it will be because of his secondary pitches, which lag behind his solid-average fastball. He throws a slider and changeup presently, though neither consistently stands out at this point.
