After pitching just 10 innings in the previous three seasons, Slegers has been the best starter on an Indiana club making a run at a national seed in the NCAA Division I playoffs. He worked just one game as an Arizona high school senior in 2010 because of growth-plate issues in his forearm, then dealt with a related injury with the Hoosiers in 2011. Working hard on his conditioning, he developed a stress fracture below his right knee that limited him to five relief appearances last year. Perhaps the tallest pitcher in the 2013 draft at 6-foot-10 and 250 pounds, Slegers is athletic and repeats his sound delivery well for his size. Early in the season he reached 95 mph with his fastball and displayed an average slider. He got tired as he dealt with a regular workload for the first time in four years, however, and was pitching with a straighter 89-91 mph fastball and a below-average breaking ball at season's end. He throws strikes but lacks deception, which is why he had just 43 strikeouts through 73 innings this spring. Slegers' lack of a track record, as well as his status as a draft-eligible sophomore, have led to a variety of opinions on where he'll get picked. If he returned to Indiana and improved the quality of his stuff and his command, he could go in the top three rounds of the 2014 draft. One scout compared him to Doug Fister with less life on his pitches.
