Jones played baseball and football at LSU and was a trusted lefty reliever out of the Tigers' bullpen during its 2009 College World Series run, getting most of his 6.2 career innings in the NCAA postseason. The Brewers drafted him in the 50th round of the 2010 draft, but Jones was better known as a hard-hitting safety and was a third-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft by the New York football Giants. He never played in the NFL due to injuries incurred in a single-car accident, which have prompted more than 10 surgeries on his left leg. When he was healthy, Jones showed a good breaking ball and a fastball that reached 92 mph, and while he was rusty, he was hitting 92 mph and showing some of that same spin ability in pre-draft workouts
