Florida Gulf Coast should lead all Florida colleges in players drafted this season, led by righthanders Ricky Knapp and Cooney, with middle infielder Brandon Bednar and outfielder Sean Dwyer also potential picks in the first 10 rounds. Cooney, with a good pitcher's frame at 6-foot-3, 196 pounds, has the flashiest tools of the group. He came out of the chute generating plenty of buzz with a 90-93 mph fastball that reached 95, to go with a plus slider out of the bullpen. He was throwing his slider with low-80s power in a relief role, but since moving into a starting role in late April he saw his stuff take a step back, sitting 90-92 with a slider described as ordinary. He does throw a solid-average changeup with tumble, so his three-pitch mix gives him a chance to start as a pro, at least to give him more innings and experience. His hooking arm action in the back likely limits him to a relief role at higher levels.
