If he hadn't torn cartilage in his right knee and missed much of 2000, Moeller might have been the frontrunner to start at catcher for the Twins this year. Instead, A.J. Pierzynski played well in Minnesota down the stretch and moved to the front of the line. Moeller is by no means out of the competition for a major league job this year, however. His offense and defense both fit into the middle of the pack in the catching corps that includes Pierzynski, Matthew LeCroy and Danny Ardoin. Moeller led the 1999 Arizona Fall League in hitting, a springboard to a successful season offensively in 2000--when he was in the lineup. He will need to improve his plate discipline if he's going to continue to produce. His defense may have slipped a bit, as he gunned down just 10 percent of basestealers.
