Before joining Vanderbilt, Hayes hit .362 during his first season with Walters State (Tenn.) CC. During his two years at Walters State, from 2014-15, Hayes threw just 6.1 innings, but has since become a draft prospect as a righthander out of the bullpen with Vanderbilt. Hayes is a competitor who attacks batters out of the pen with a 60-grade fastball that has touched 97 mph this season. He also uses an average slider that is at its best when it finishes out of the strike zone. He's allowed far too many hits out of the pen with the Commodores this season, and while he has an argument as one of the team's most consistent hitters, his live arm gives him more potential as a reliever at the next level, especially if he can turn his slider into a real weapon.
