Top 2022 College MLB Draft Prospects

Savino, Nate (Courtesy Of Virginia)

Baseball America’s 2022 college rankings are compiled in consultation with major league scouts. The list is an attempt to gauge the industry’s consensus on the talent of the draft-eligible four-year players in the country, though plenty will change between now and the 2022 draft.

After updating our rankings for the 2021 class several weeks ago, we’re updating and expanding our rankings for the 2022 class.

There is much more uncertainty for our 2022 rankings than our current year draft rankings and that’s particularly true for the college group. 2022-eligible players suffered from the shortened 2020 season as much as the 2021-eligible players did and because of that there’s less of a consensus on the top players given the short amount of time to show their stuff.

Still, there are a few changes to the list from our previous update with newly eligible players included and a few loud performances.

Two lefthanders lead the way in the 2022 class, with Virginia southpaw Nate Savino jumping over Florida LHP Hunter Barco for the top spot in the country. Savino would have been a potential first-round arm coming out of high school in the 2020 class, but instead chose to reach campus early in Charlottesville and posted a 3.38 ERA in 10.2 innings before the 2020 season was shut down.

Barco ranked as the No. 32 prospect in the 2019 class and will help lead a strong Florida pitching staff next season after posting a 1.40 ERA in 19.1 innings and four starts in the shortened 2020 season. Both Barco and Savino have impressive fastball and slider combinations to go along with projectable frames and starter profiles.

Cal Poly shortstop Brooks Lee is currently the top-ranked hitter in the 2022 class, checking in at the No. 3 spot overall. Lee was the No. 38 player in the 2019 class coming out of high school and has shown a potential plus hit tool from both sides of the plate. Lee has played just two collegiate games with Cal Poly, but had a strong showing in the Northwoods League this summer, hitting .345/.393/.473 with four home runs and seven doubles in 36 games.

Vanderbilt leads all programs with eight players ranked among the top 100—with uber-projectable lefthander Spencer Jones the top-ranked player at No. 8. Florida is another usual suspect and checks in with six players ranked in the top 100, tied with Georgia Tech for second on the list.

    Ht: 6-3 | Wt: 195 | B-T: L-L
    Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
    Age At Draft: 20.5

Savino had the talent to go in the first round of the 2020 draft, with a three-pitch mix that includes a fastball in the 93-95 mph range with terrific run and sink, a sweeping slider with impressive depth and a solid changeup as well.

    Hunter Barco

    Notes:

    Ht: 6-4 | Wt: 212 | B-T: L-L
    Commit/Drafted: Mets '19 (24)
    Age At Draft: 21.6

A highly-touted prep dating back to his underclass days, Barco has shown three potential plus pitches at his best with a fastball that gets into the mid-90s, a low-spin split change with impressive depth and a slider in the low-80s that has bite and depth when he’s on top of it.

    Notes:

    Ht: 6-0 | Wt: 192 | B-T: R-R
    Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
    Age At Draft: 21.0

The highest ranked position player to go undrafted in the 2020 class, Parada is a strong, consistent hitter who regularly hammers fastball velocity and solid breaking balls. With a solid track record against high-level competition to go along with athleticism and above-average arm strength behind the plate, he is the next in line at the catching factory that is Georgia Tech.

    Notes:

    Ht: 6-1 | Wt: 180 | B-T: B-R
    Commit/Drafted: Giants '19 (35)
    Age At Draft: 21.4

One of the better pure hitters out of Southern California in the 2019 high school class, Lee has a compact, pure swing from both sides of the plate with reliable hands and quick footwork on the defensive end that should allow him to stick up the middle.

    Bryce Osmond

    Notes:

    Ht: 6-3 | Wt: 180 | B-T: R-R
    Commit/Drafted: Nationals '19 (35)
    Age At Draft: 21.9

A high-upside, projection arm out of high school, Osmond has flashed two plus pitches with a fastball up to 96 and a true, 60-grade slider but he has struggled with consistency and didn’t throw strikes at a high level in his collegiate debut in 2020.

    Notes:

    Ht: 6-3 | Wt: 187 | B-T: L-L
    Commit/Drafted: Cardinals '19 (37)
    Age At Draft: 21.2

Newell has a solid package of tools including above-average speed and raw power, and showed his bat could translate to the collegiate level in 2020, hitting a loud .407/.545/.729 with four home runs and eight stolen bases through 18 games.

    Ht: 6-7 | Wt: 212 | B-T: L-L
    Commit/Drafted: Angels '19 (31)
    Age At Draft: 21.2

Jones had tantalizing upside as a lefthander out of high school but didn’t pitch at all during his senior season after undergoing surgery to repair an elbow fracture. He’s a real two-way player with athleticism, solid speed and good feel for the barrel, but scouts believe his upside at the pro level is higher on the mound when he’s fully healthy.

    Ht: 6-4 | Wt: 215 | B-T: R-R
    Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
    Age At Draft: 21.1

Mederos will be a draft-eligible sophomore in the 2022 class and had one of the best curveballs in the 2020 class as a high schooler. He has struggled with consistency in his strike throwing at times, but when he’s on he has an advanced pitch-mix of five offerings that keep hitters consistently off-balance.

    Notes:

    Ht: 6-2 | Wt: 190 | B-T: R-R
    Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
    Age At Draft: 20.9

A talented high school quarterback and legitimate two-way prospect on the baseball field, Horton has twitchy athleticism in the field with an opposite field approach offensively. He has touched 94-95 mph on the mound with natural feel to spin a breaking ball.

    Cade Doughty

    Notes:

    Ht: 6-1 | Wt: 200 | B-T: R-R
    Commit/Drafted: Tigers '19 (39)
    Age At Draft: 21.3

A refined gamer-type player coming out of high school, Doughty has above-average hand-eye coordination and a chance to be a 55-grade hitter, but he’ll need to tap into more power to profile well at second or third base at the next level.

    Ht: 6-2 | Wt: 170 | B-T: L-L
    Commit/Drafted: Red Sox '19 (37)
    Age At Draft: 21.5

Prielipp had a dominant start to the 2020 season and was one of the most impactful freshmen in the country. The 6-foot-2 lefthander didn’t allow a run—earned or otherwise—over 21 innings and four starts and struck out 35 batters (15.0 per nine) to just six walks (2.6 per nine).

    Notes:

    Ht: 6-0 | Wt: 210 | B-T: R-R
    Commit/Drafted: Padres '19 (23)
    Age At Draft: 21.0

Hampton was one of the highest-ranked players out of the 2019 high school class to make it to campus. He has loads of athleticism and exciting raw tools—including plus-plus speed—but his two-sport status could make things more complicated for scouts.
