College Top 25
For the first time this year, there is a new No. 1 in the Baseball America Top 25, powered by Louisville Slugger. Oregon State went 3-1 last week to improve to 15-1 and takes over the top spot in the rankings.
The Beavers this weekend won a series against Cal State Fullerton in a rematch of the 2017 College World Series, their 16th straight series win dating back to 2016. Oregon State spent 10 weeks last year ranked No. 1 going into the NCAA Tournament.
Florida, which had been the top-ranked team this year since the Preseason Top 25, lost twice last week to Central Florida and slips to No. 2 as a result. Stanford, Kentucky and Clemson, all off to torrid starts to the season, round out the top five.
Not only is there a new No. 1 this week, five teams enter the rankings in a week of significant shakeup. Duke leads the newcomers, entering the rankings at No. 20 after winning a series against Virginia. It is the Blue Devils’ first appearance in the Top 25 since Feb. 23, 1998. East Carolina, Sam Houston State, North Carolina State and Illinois follow Duke in the Top 25. East Carolina, Sam Houston and NC State are all ranked for the first time since last season. Illinois returns to the rankings for the first time since the end of the 2015 season.
Falling out of the Top 25 are North Carolina, Virginia, Texas, St. John’s and Coastal Carolina. All five suffered losing weekends.
The Southeastern Conference leads all conferences with eight teams in the Top 25. The Atlantic Coast Conference follows with five representatives.
The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through March 11 and do not include ties.
