The last time the Tigers picked first overall, they landed Casey Mize in 2018. Two years later he's Detroit's top prospect and one of the top-ranked arms in the minors.

Again now again, Tigers find themselves on the clock.

Detroit bottomed out at 47-114 last year, its third consecutive season losing 98 games or more. And while Detroit is still in the midst of an arduous rebuild, it hasn't been a fruitless effort so far, especially on the pitching side. The Tigers system climbed to among the top half in baseball at the end of 2019 thanks largely to the talent of the arms in their system, headlined by the likes of Mize, Matt Manning and the emergence of Tarik Skubal.

Now Detroit hopes to see some of its bats make similar strides.
