Cortijo opened eyes at the WWBA Championships in the fall. He's a very good athlete--a plus runner and a quality defender in center field, but teams are more interested in Cortijo's quick arm on the mound. He throws from a lower three-quarter arm slot and generates late movement on his fastball, which sits in the low 90s and can bump 94-95. Scouts see him as a future reliever, with his secondary stuff grading as below-average at present. He throws a mid-70s curveball with long and early break that he'll have to tighten to develop into an average offering. Cortijo's athleticism, arm strength and deception give him a chance to develop into a major leaguer. He is already 19 years old and is committed to junior college. Fears that he'll end up in the bullpen limit his draft market.
