Yet another member of an extremely talented Kansas City area high schools class, Benninghoff never got a chance to match Riley Pint or Joey Wentz this spring. The Arkansas signee separated his throwing shoulder during football season. While the injury was initially thought to be minor, it ended up lingering through the baseball season as well, limiting Benninghoff to one ineffective outing on the mound. Pre-injury, Benninghoff showed the potential for three average offerings with an 88-91 mph fastball from a lower three-quarters arm slot, some feel for spinning a tight breaking ball and an inconsistent changeup that showed late fade when he threw it with conviction. Benninghoff's shoulder injury makes it more likely he makes it to Arkansas, but pre-injury he showed the stuff and frame (6-foot-4) to be a top five round pick.
