Name: John Thomas Ginn
Born: May 20, 1999 in Flowood, MS
High School: Brandon (Miss.) HS
College: Mississippi State
Ht.: 6'2" / Wt.: 200 lbs
Bats: R / Throws: R
Drafted in the 2nd round (52nd overall) by the New York Mets in 2020 (signed for $2,900,000)
The Dodgers drafted Ginn in the first round out of high school in 2018, but he turned them down and made his way to Mississippi State. Ginn won Southeastern Conference freshman of the year and entered the 2020 season as a draft-eligible sophomore with a chance to become a two-time first round pick, but he made it through just three innings in his first start of the season and had season-ending Tommy John surgery. When healthy, Ginn possesses two potentially double-plus pitches. His fastball has touched 99 mph with life and running action that makes it even more impressive beyond its raw velocity. His slider has also been graded as a future plus-plus offering by some evaluators, and he has a solid changeup as well. Before surgery, Ginn showed he could hold his stuff over longer outings, repeat his delivery and throw enough strikes to start, but now teams have to decide whether to take the risk on his health. He could again be difficult to sign because of the additional leverage that comes with being a draft-eligible sophomore.
