One scout summed up Chapman like this: "He's fast--like, really fast. And that about covers it." Chapman's well above-average speed is his best asset, but he's still learning to use it. He gets picked off too frequently, as he shuffles his feet pre-pitch, and hasn't learned to read pitchers. He tries to bunt a lot but has yet to get a hang for the technique. He does track down balls well in center field, where his fringy to average arm is certainly playable. Chapman lacks the arm and footwork for shortstop, where he plays in high school, but has decent hands and might be able to play second base. A switch-hitter, Chapman has no chance to hit from the right side, but he occasionally drives balls to the gaps from the left side. Sometimes he shows a slap-and-run approach, but he still hits the ball in the air too often, and he is very susceptible to breaking balls. Chapman's speed and athleticism give him a chance, but he's a long-term project with plenty of risk.
