Scouting Report

Mercado-Hood moved atop San Diego's lineup as a senior and became of the one West Coast Conference's most effective hitters, hitting .314 with 18 doubles, nine homers and 38 RBIs. Mercado-Hood has a pure lefthanded swing that generates enough loft for power. He has a discerning eye that yielded more walks (28) than strikeouts (20) as a junior, and he has the good enough barrel control to drive different types of pitches into the gaps. Mercado-Hood's value is tied to his bat. He is a poor defender in right field with a below-average arm. He is a below-average runner, although he has good enough instincts to pick his spots and steal a bag from time to time.
