Drafted in the 9th round (269th overall) by the Miami Marlins in 2017 (signed for $125,000)
Baranek overcome numerous injuries and Tourette's syndrome to earn a scholarship to UC Irvine out of high school, but the NCAA stripped him permanently of his eligibility after ruling he signed with an agent. Baranek played two years at Santa Ana JC before transferring to Hope International, a second-year NAIA program. He led Hope on a Cinderella run to the NAIA World Series this spring, hitting .364 with 14 homers, 40 RBIs and 20 stolen bases out of the leadoff spot. The lefthanded-hitting Baranek matches power that is a tick above average with 70-grade raw speed, although his speed doesn't play quite that fast on the bases. He plays an adequate center field with his speed and an average arm. Baranek has a checkered injury history with major injuries to his neck, back, ankle and knee, but his performance and dedication have made him one of the top NAIA prospects in the draft class.
