Kerner is smaller than the ideal catcher at 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, but makes up for it with superb athleticism and arm strength. Kerner posts average to above-average run times, rare for a catcher, and translates that well behind the plate. His quick footwork sets the tone for a quick release, and he has posted 1.9-second pop times, a plus arm. He makes accurate throws and has the requisite tools, athleticism and smarts to be an above-average-to-plus defender behind the plate. Kerner at times will show good bat speed and surprising pop, including a home run at the Area Code Games. However, many evaluators are concerned about his lack of strength to impact the ball consistently. He is committed to San Diego.
