Cron was a third-round pick out of high school by the Mariners as a catcher but immediately moved to first base at Texas Christian, where he was a fixture in the lineup from Day One. After hitting .338 with six homers as a freshman, Cron had a rough sophomore year, hitting just .208, then bounced back a bit as a junior. He has some of the feel for hitting and raw power that made his older brother C.J. an All-American at Utah and now a big leaguer with the Angels. Their father Chris reached the big leagues briefly and has had a 20-year career in player development as a manager and coach with the Tigers and White Sox. Kevin's modest athletic ability limits him to first base, so he'll have to get to his power more frequently as a pro after hitting 12 homers in his first three seasons at TCU.
