Scouts routinely talk about the lack of college hitters, but Marty Costes is not the player who's brought up in those conversations. A draft-eligible sophomore, Costes has hit in both of his two seasons with the Terrapins, and more importantly, hit with authority. The 5-9, 200-pound outfielder brings plus raw power from the right side and has gotten to that power in both seasons, slugging .479 with nine home runs as a redshirt freshman and .549 with 10 during his 2017 season. To add to his track record, he hit .319/.437/.560 with seven home runs in 116 at-bats in the wood bat Cal Ripken Collegiate League last summer. That's encouraging for teams who wonder if his power can translate to the next level. What's not encouraging, is that there's no obvious position for him to play. A right fielder with Maryland, Costes is a below-average runner with a body that's not going to help him improve in that area moving forward. He can't play up the middle and his 5-foot-9 height eliminates first base, so a team is likely going to have to put him in one of the outfield corners and hope his bat will carry value on its own. There are some concerns about his swing path and his ability to handle velocity and spin.
